The No.1 Key to Longevity? It Might Surprise You...

September 3, 2026 by Sarah Foster

When we think about living a longer, healthier life, we tend to think about exercise, eating well, getting enough sleep and looking after our physical health. And of course, all of those things matter.

But research into longevity consistently points to another incredibly important factor: social connection.

Having people around us, feeling part of a community and maintaining meaningful relationships are strongly associated with better health and longer life. And it doesn’t have to mean having a huge circle of friends. A chat over a cup of tea, going to a class, volunteering, meeting a friend for a walk or simply having somewhere you feel you belong can all make a difference.

It’s one of the reasons we include social connection in all of our training. Movement is important, but so is what happens around the movement — the conversations, laughter, friendships and sense of belonging that can develop when people come together.

So this month, we want to celebrate you.

To everyone delivering classes, running groups, supporting communities and creating opportunities for people to connect: what you do goes far beyond physical activity.

You’re helping people move, certainly. But you’re also helping them connect, belong and thrive — and that may be every bit as important.
